Three trends boost the potential for spinout ventures, which are new companies founded by former employers of incumbent organizations:
1) Non-compete bans. Recent bans in the U.S. and Ontario reduce potential barriers for many employees that wish to leave to start their own ventures.
2) Open innovation. The adoption of open innovation practices makes it easier to access important components without misappropriation of proprietary information.
3) Friendly parent firms. Parent organizations are reaping the benefits of a spinout-friendly approach, including corporate coherence, knowledge spillbacks, and a reputation for incubation of innovation. Companies like Nokia, Palantir, and AstraZeneca are leading the way.
